Watch: Why Does Following Jesus Mean Letting Go of Everything?
Watch the companion video, then continue reading to examine the biblical testimony in its full context.
The rich man’s sadness proves that eternal life cannot be bought, earned, or kept while you are still holding onto a divided loyalty. Jesus does not simply ask us to give away money; He asks for our whole heart and our complete commitment.
Surrender the Things You Secretly Trust.
Jesus’ command to sell everything hit the exact thing that this man trusted more than God. True faith begins when we completely surrender—giving up whatever money, status, or self-reliance keeps us from depending entirely on Him.
Put Your Confidence in Christ, Not Your Own Effort.
Giving things up does not earn your way into God’s kingdom. When the disciples asked who could be saved, Jesus took away all ideas that human goodness is enough. He stated clearly that salvation is impossible for humans to achieve on their own. Our obedience cannot buy God’s favor; it simply shows we realize that only God can save us.
Follow Him with Complete Loyalty.
Jesus did not only say, “Go, sell.” He also said, “Come, follow Me.” Following Jesus is not just about what you leave behind, but about who you are following. Commitment means walking behind Jesus toward the cross, submitting to His authority, and living in His presence.
Rest in the God Who Can Do Everything.
Stop the exhausting effort to make yourself look perfect through moral rules, social status, or outward performance. Bring your weakness and helplessness to the One who does what humans find impossible. He offers a true treasure that lasts forever.
Consider this.
What response does Jesus require?
Take your next step
Release rival trust and follow Jesus rather than trying to secure eternal life through what you possess or achieve.
